A recent unfortunate accident on the main street, injured a passerby when a large billboard slipped off a wall and came crashing on her leg. The press was there to take her picture, front and center. No privacy, no respect.
A PR person, working for a certain company, employed by some minister was arrested on ugly charges. The press was there to take his picture front and center. No privacy.
A massage therapist was arrested on ugly charges. The press was there to take his picture front and center. No privacy.
A customs agent was arrested on ugly charges. The press was there to take his picture front and center. No privacy.
QUESTION: Don’t they deserve some protection?
The way these incidents were reported, it was a public shame fest.
Sure they deserve shaming, AFTER they are found guilty.
A friendly lawyer writes: JM is a suspect and as such deserves privacy at least until he has been found guilty. Since there is no media code what’s so ever, media can publish his frontal picture and full name as being newsworthy, just as they do with other suspects of similar crimes.
BECAUSE, the general public wishes to know of these accusations, and has an appetite for seedy, sleazy scandals.
I heard he was barred from Cocolishi, the seat of government, which they can do because he was employed through a third party company. They just need to ask said company to send someone else to do the job. It is not elegant but under the current climate as well as elections upcoming, I can’t see the Minister of Justice tolerating the presence of someone accused of these acts.
Of course, we can’t cherry pick.
Rule for one, rule for all.
Either we come to an understanding that applies to all suspects, or we don’t.
If you only write about one suspect, and protect the other, it might look like you’re giving your peeps preferential treatment.
Personally, I think all information should remain confidential since it’s a sex offense, because making the name of the abuser public on this island also makes the (young) victim identifiable.
I know my opinion is not a popular one.
We do not need victims to be re-victimized.
It’s different if the victim herself/himself comes forward with her/his story or in case of unfortunate death, then we can all be informed!
