Celebrity, Japanese-Peruvian Chef Toshiro Konishi, was met with great enthusiasm at Sushi-Ya, Renaissance Marketplace, this weekend as he prepared his award winning specialties for local patrons eager to experience his novel twist on traditional Japanese cuisine, on the occasion of the restaurant’s 10th anniversary.
The special menu prepared for the celebration featured Maguro pickled in olive oil, rice vinegar with Criole sauce which won Best Dish in Seville Spain at an international competition, Hotategai in Tiger Milk topped with Tobiko which won Best Dish in Madrid, Spain at an International Food Expo, Toshiro’s Ceviche, Wakame Salad, Lettuce wrapped Gyoza, an assortments of Makis — Shiitake, Rainbow, Fried and Cevichado, Mussels topped with Peruvian lemon sauce, Pork Misozuke and Lychee with vanilla ice cream, all accompanied by Navarro Correas sparkling wine and UmeBlanc with dessert.
Sushi-Ya owners Sven & Daisy Ellerkamp met the chef in Bogotá at an international food show and invited him as their special guests in celebration of their successful decade in Oranjestad as the first Japanese restaurant in town.
Many of Sushi Ya’s regulars dropped in for a drink and a taste to congratulate the restaurateurs on their success. Chef Toshiro mingles with patrons, declaring he loves Aruba and will be coming back on vacation soon.
When in Peru, visit his namesake restaurant Toshiro, in San Isidro, an upscale district of Lima, and drop in to dine at Sushi-Ya, any day of the week, the local sushi masters there now have a huge list of new menu items having apprenticed with the great Toshiro.
