Special request from your favorite columnist

Dear readers

This time, I need you to do something simple, for me.

I want you to go to your online banking and help pay some of LUNA FOUNDATION’s vet bills.

The pandemic was not kind to dogs.

Luckily, throughout, Zoe Conijn and her crew of crazy volunteers kept up the good work, picking pups off the street, cleaning, mending, fixing, spaying and neutering, and heaping love on their heads, until restored.

Check out their FB page, lots of heartwarming stories of abandoned pets who found salvation.

Luna Foundations established a Safe Haven somewhere on the island. I will not tell you where, because then more unwanted pups will be dropped there by the heartless. The Haven is a lovely place with lots of room to run, dig, patrol and snooze. The dogs all live in recycled wood condos, and there is a special area for puppies and even senior dogs.

Yes, Zoe takes in everyone. She is an equal opportunity rescue operation.

She welcomes old dogs, too, not just cute adoptable puppies.

You could easily say that: Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, is Zoe’s motto. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

We visited the Safe Haven twice during Shelter in Place, delivering food donations. I notice son #1 giving a wowo dushi to a small black dog, nothing to write home about. He was following Zena on FB. When rescued Zena was hairless, mangy, skinny, titis hanging. A depressing sight.

Then she went through Zoe’s rehab machine at the Safe Haven.

You should see Zena now, a princess, bright eyed with a shiny raven coat, queen of my son’s heart!

She turned out to be a great companion. She was lucky Zoe found her.

The unpaid vet bills? I pledge today to make a contribution, at both places.

Sorry, times are tough, but a small contribution is better than nothing.
