Samuel Sarmiento and Natusha Croes, creative in different ways

Samuel Sarmiento at Fundación Rancho

If you visit Fundación Rancho in Oranjestad, you will encounter Ode to Fishermen, a solo exhibition by artist Samuel Sarmiento who shows off his paintings, drawing and ceramic art objects.

The neighborhood of Rancho is forever linked with fishing, one of the island’s first economic pillars. Samuel depicts early life in Rancho, and the fishermen’s daily toil on canvas, paper and ceramics. I even recognized the portrait of Dama Colina, a legendary fisherman who in the early days of hospitality used to supply the hotels and restaurants with fresh fish.

I am a fan of Sarmiento, and I try to follow his work.

Born in Maracaibo, he started as a self-taught painter, and ultimately graduated with a Master’s degree in Artistic Production at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain. His work was exhibited in Venezuela, Aruba, Spain, Panama and even China. He participated in Caribbean Linked VI, in Aruba, as well as the Atlantic World Art Fair, in Barbados.

Samuel lives and works in Aruba.

On Wednesday, he will be showing off his work as a teacher, at Atelier 89, as he wraps up a ceramic course under his direction, 8pm.

Clifford Rosa, the president of Fundación Rancho, is happy to host the exhibit as part of the 200 year celebration of Oranjestad. He is always pleased to promote the neighborhood and highlight its importance to the social, economic and cultural development of the island.

According to exhibition curator Ana María Hernández, art is the vehicle to bring knowledge, stories, and experiences closer to the community. It brought it closer to me.

I understand opening night was very busy, if you missed you have until August 4th to visit.

Poet and Dancer Natusha Croes presents E’Mantra Experience

Natasha Croes, a poet and a dance, announced a series of live shows, hosted in a private residence during June. They were designed to publicize her debut EP, coming in the not-so-distant future.

For the entire month, on Fridays and Sundays, she performed what she calls:  E’Mantra Experience, to a select audience of friends and fans.

The performances took place on Bucutiweg in open air, on a roof top of a local home. It consisted of seven songs that Natusha wrote both lyrics and music for.

The songs represent an inner dialogue, she has been having with herself.

The lyrics and music were accompanied by expressive dance.

At the end of the 25 minute performance, we had a drink, and got to congratulate the artist on her work.

Natusha deserves praise for putting herself out there, and sharing her innermost thoughts and feelings in an effort to reclaim her power, express her authenticity, maximize her potential, calm her nerves, navigate her interior landscapes, avoid criticism, practice self-love, find her purpose in life and become the person she was supposed to become. In the creative process she demonstrates resilience, becomes fearless, and mostly rediscovers the innocence and joy of youth, by reconnecting with childhood divinity, and getting over trauma and loss experienced in adulthood.

What I described is a fantastic internal journey, and Natusha takes her audience along for the ride.
