Nothing is guaranteed

Two short stories. We can learn a lot from short stories.

Good Morning, says one of my readers, I live here in Aruba, for 20 years, and read your column daily. This is what I have to tell you, cutting a long story short.

My daughter had a gender ultrasound at a private clinic in Aruba, on November 16, 2022.

She paid Awg 250 florin, out of pocket. She is young, it is her first child, what can we say, she was impatient.

She got an envelope handed to her with the sex of the baby.

Then she hosted a gender reveal party, on November 26th, with pink ribbons, pink bonbons and pink cupcakes and she got many gifts for a girl, cute pink shoes pink socks, and pink onesies.

A lot of money was spent on a girlie nursery theme.

Then a routine ultrasound at the hospital followed, and they said it was a boy.

My stressed-out daughter paid for another ultrasound at the Midwife’s clinic. And it was still a boy.

When she contacted the clinic and wanted her money back, they were dismissive and snooty, she explained to them that a lot of money has been spent in the wrong color scheme and that the refund would be helpful. They said no. Then I asked, because this was taking a toll on my daughter. Their offer? A free gynecological visit.

Really?

I asked them to stand by their work and be professional. They ignore me.

My daughter, the future mom, that’s is still the reader speaking, is a young woman working 44 hours a week making minimum wages, so that Awg 250 was earned with the sweat of her brow and trusted to get good service and true results. But they insisted they could not guarantee accuracy.

Finally, because of a threat to go public, the money was refunded. They dragged their feet a bit ‘processing’ the claim, and finally in the first week of January the amount was refunded, by an arrogant doctor, who treated it all as a big nuisance.

I told the story to a medical professional an MD, and he laughed. He told me about one of his patients who reportedly had her tubes tied, after the birth of her 4th baby.  She was still breast-feeding the infant when she felt her boobs swell, and the doctor confirmed she was pregnant, again. This time with twins. The surgeon in charge of tying the tubes must have forgotten, or tied them very loosely, for a stubborn. determined sperm to still get through!
