Jason Mathilda, is quite famous on the island, and he is not even 30 years old. Famous with his brushes with the law.
On December 13th, 2021, on a Monday, he killed his father. That was the 7th assassination of 2021, in Aruba. He was out of Jail at the time, on a conditional release, and while out and about, must have had words with his father, resulting in a tragic death.
Under normal circumstances Mathilda’s jail sentence would end in 2023, but because of various unknown reasons, he was released early.
We already heard about him in October, when he stole a jet ski and made the Police chase him on the water, until his vehicle ran out of fuel in Savaneta, where he allowed the Men in Blue to arrest him. But not for long.
Having been released he committed patricide. In many cultures and religions patricide was considered one of the worst sins, and during the Roman republic for example, it was the only crime for which a civilian could be sentenced to death.
There is more. This was Mathilda’s second killing. He is a very violent man.
Attorney Doris Canwood felt worried last week when she posted her concerns about mental illness. Many people she said, would like to jail Mathilda for eternity, throw away the key, but unfortunately that is not an appropriate solution, the man has mental issues and locking him up postpones the confrontation with the disease, but doesn’t solve anything. A mental health facility is no luxury she stated, it is a necessity, so individuals who are a menace to our society may find some form of treatment.
In 2009, Mathilda was detained, because of a killing in Oranjestad, by knife to the throat, following an altercation. In 2010, he was sentence to 8 years in jail, ending in 2023, but was released at the end of 2018.
His jail time wasn’t idyllic, since he met the son of his victim there, and had a number of confrontations which he handled with a knife. His behavior in jail remained violent, and when released he attempted an armed robbery, in April 2019, on a gas station employee carrying cash to the bank, for deposit. This time he was armed with a gun.
In December 2019, he was condemned to 5 years, for the armed robbery, but as you know in October 2021, he was out and about, entertaining the Police with his jet ski driving skills, released after just 2 years. Somehow the court of appeals eliminated his sentence in January of this year.
