Each month, Caribbean Queen at the Palm Beach Plaza Mall honors one local female artist who lives and creates here. The Caribbean Queen program was launched when the store opened in late 2011, and has been running successfully ever since.
For the month of December 2015, local artist Violet Richardson is the boutique’s celebrated Caribbean Queen, showcasing her charming crochet line.
Born in Aruba Violet comes from a long line of strong-willed women, supporting their families members and kids with needles and threads as seamstresses, embroiderers, and crochet artisans. Having inherited the natural talent and ability to sew, embroider and crochet Violet started making her own line of handmade crafts.
She recalls taking craft lessons in primary school and loving it, and she regrets the fact that it is no longer taught in schools today.
Violet devotes much of her leisure to her hobby, making different items such as necklaces and bracelets all festooned with buttons and beads, and while she can paint and draw, much of her focus is on crafts, making gifts for her friends from sweaters, to skirts, caps, blankets and much more. Inspired by Pinterest she started making crochet owls recently, and they have met with great popularity.
Violet is pleased to share that the apple doesn’t fall far away from the tree, and that her daughter Abigail Peterson was Caribbean queen for October 2015, and her work is still available in the store. Abigail is following in her mother’s footsteps when it comes to crochet and passion for handcrafts.
Caribbean Queen earmarks a percentage of all sales for its Tikkun Olam (Repair of the World) program. The collected funds are given quarterly to local not-for-profit organizations in an ongoing effort to serve the community. All the foundations served with donations from Caribbean Queen are dedicated to the promotion of art and artisan education on the island.
Enjoy unique handicrafts by Violet Peterson, throughout the month of December, and drop in to witness a live demonstration of her craft at the boutique on the third Thursday of the month in the evening hours.
