Eagle Beach – During the May General Meeting at La Cabana Beach Resort & Casino associates and members of management reviewed their commitment to excellence and teamwork by means of a kite building contest, nicknamed The Kite Affair.
This week they gathered in a neighboring sport field to test-fly their creations. The competition, in the area of originality, design, construction, airworthiness and beauty, yielded a number of serious contenders yet the most airworthy of all kites was that of the Front Office department, while the one presented by the Maintenance Department ended up tangled in a tree.
The Kite Affair was introduced to associates as a symbol of collaboration and while they were building kites in their respective departments associates discussed what it takes to fly one, and the delicate yet resilient structure it employs.
Kites are a familiar sight around the island in the Spring, when many kite building and flying competitions take place. While it looks simple, it is really an art that requires precision and dedication, says General Manager Joe Najjar, whose kite while small, displayed a great aerodynamic promise.
In the famous Mary Poppins movie, Banker George Banks explains it best: With tuppence for paper and strings, you can have your own set of wings. With your feet on the ground, you’re a bird in flight! With your fist holding tight, to the string of your kite! Let’s go fly a kite up to the highest height, let’s go fly a kite, and send it soaring, up through the atmosphere, up where the air is clear, Oh, let’s go fly a kite!
