The Navarro Correas winery belongs to one of Argentina’s oldest wine producing families whose association with high-quality wines can be traced back to 1798, when Sir Juan de Dios Correas planted the first vine seeds in the lands of Mendoza at the foot of the Andes ridge.
Sir Juan De Dios also played an active role in the public life of Mendoza, as public servant, Municipal Councilor first, then governor. The family sold grapes and wines to other regional wine-makers for centuries and finally, in 1974 Sir Edmundo Navarro Correas, a direct descendant of Juan de Dios Correas, started to manufacture wines bearing his own name.
Some of these noble wines were paired at La Bodega with a refined Argentinean tasting menu, under the watchful eye of Chef Jeroen van Buuren, who is the head chef at her majesty’s Dutch Marine base in Savaneta. Chef Jeroen was enthusiastically assisted by his two favorite kitchen hands, Chef Baas and Chef Brenda, while Romar Trading’s wine artist Clive Faustin, pored the wines and entertained guests with stories and anecdotes about the mystery and complexity of wine production.
Guests were greeted with a flute of Navarro Correas Brut Malbec Rose, enjoying the pink sparkling wine upon arrival at the charming wine shop on Gutenbergstraat. The bubbly was followed by Navarro Correas Merlot, paired with an Amuse of stuffed Roast Beef. The appetizer featured Navarro Correas Sauvignon Blanc and was paired with Argentinean Salad. As Argentineans love pasta with a passion, the kitchen crew prepared one with shrimp, in creamy white wine sauce paired with Navarro Correas Chardonnay. The main course befitting Mendoza and the pampas offered Navarro Correas Alegoria Reserva Malbec, paired with sliced Lomito steak, over stewed vegetables and potatoes, garnished with a garlic yogurt dressing. For dessert, Argentina’s favorite sweets delighted guests with crepes, Dulce de Leche ice-cream and chocolate garnish, paired with the sweet and unforgettable taste of Concha y Toro Late Harvest.
Wine Artist Clive Faustin who handles the Wine Portfolio and is an Account Team Leader at Romar Trading reports that La Bodega wine shop on Gutenbergstraat 4, Oranjestad, sells vintages from Australia, Argentina, Chile, Italy, France, Spain, New Zealand, Portugal, the United States, and South Africa, all imported here by Romar Trading. Every last Friday of the month hosts a special wine & food pairing, at the Bodega, also introducing Le Nez Du Vin, discussing the different wine aromas, and challenging audiences to recognize subtle differences.
