Deloitte Shares Important Information Regarding the Latest Tax Development With Local Professionals

Oranjestad — July 4 2014. Michael-Leo van Romondt, tax partner, Deloitte Dutch Caribbean, and Geert Weber, tax, co-hosted a Friday afternoon lecture on tax developments at the Aruba Surfside Marina.

Van Romondt explains that in light of recent important tax developments, Deloitte Dutch Caribbean decided to host a lecture by renown Professor Dr. Peter Kavelaars, focusing on a variety of tax issues.
The lecture covered, among other subjects, the new Aruban legislation regarding chain liability, hired personnel and directors’ liability. It also presented the recent bilateral tax agreement between Curacao and the Netherlands, Belasting Regeling Curacao Nederland, BRNC, regulating the treatment of pension income, as well as the current developments in Base Erosion and Profit Shifting, BEPS, with an elaboration on the proposed actions regarding hybrid financing, anti-abuse provisions and in general the Dutch vision on that subject, just before a short, friendly coffee break.
With refreshed energy the forum then tackled developments in European Union legislation including court decisions regarding dividends, cross border fiscal unities between parent companies and their subsidiaries, as well as fresh developments in the Netherlands in legislation and recent law cases.
At the end of the discourse guests enjoyed a casual sunset cocktail hour on the lovely deck overlooking the Caribbean with butler-passed hors’ d’oeuvres, where the professor continued to interact with lecture-goers, in a warm friendly atmosphere.
Guest speaker Professor Dr. Peter Kavelaars functions as a partner/director of the Tax Research Department at Deloitte Netherlands. He is also professor of Economics of Taxation at the world-famous Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The dignitary has been a member of the commission in charge of the simplification of Dutch wage and income tax, and as such has written many economic articles on developments in taxation.
Among his many activities, he is the chief editor of the Pension Newsletter, the Magazine of Fiscal Entrepreneurship, and a contributor to a Dutch Magazine on the topic of Tax Law Considerations, as well as the Magazine dedicated to Pension Issues. Professor Dr. Peter Kavelaars is co- author of a number of books, including “The fiscal system in the Dutch Caribbean,” and he has been a steady contributor to the weekly on Fiscal Law and the BNB.
