A Proposal from a Concerned Citizen

I would like to hereby request that the Aruba government investigate the possibility of designating L.G. Smith Blvd. from the traffic circle entering the Marriott Resort until the California Lighthouse as a scenic highway with a maximum posted speed of 40 km/h.

This is a residential road which connects the hotel area with Fisherman Huts, Tierra del Sol, Arashi and the California Lighthouse and it is used by both locals and island visitors to access the north coast beaches, restaurants and tourist attractions.  This scenic road is also used daily to showcase our island to our visitors whether by tour bus, jeep, rental car or on foot and it is a premier location to watch a beautiful Aruban sunset.

Finally, after 5:00pm, this road becomes a haven for walkers, joggers, runners and bikers.  Many of Aruba’s long distance runners utilize this road for their fitness training including one of our finest runners, Luis Lacle, who is visually impaired and trains daily on this road.

Presently the posted speed is 80 km/h and many cars and taxis exceed this limit making it dangerous for everyone.  Let us do something now before we suffer a tragedy.  Let us slow down and enjoy the views of our beautiful island and make it a safer place for our walkers, runners and bikers.
