Presents: 10 Days 1 Play (Introducing theater director Ira kip)
Created by Aruba’s emerging talent!
In collaboration with the Academy for Fine Arts & Design Aruba
There’s a little over a week left before Art Rules kicks of its sub project 10 Days 1 Play.
Theater Director Ira Kip will kick off its first edition with space for 20 Artist to join.
Together they will create a full-length theater production from scratched based on the topic of beauty. Reasons to be pretty, a play written by playwright Neil LeBute will serve as the inspiration of the production, one that investigates our standards on beauty in the fast past, social media driven, fast technology society we live in.
Participants will get to share their personal stories and ideas, as Ira guides them to writing their own story. Participants will have to think out of the box in order to create the world of their play on stage, whatever that may look like with no budget. This is really about creating something from nothing! 10 Days 1 Play is for anyone between 14 and 23 years old. Participants can sign up on the Artrules.org/10days1play website in addition to creating a 15 sec Instagram audition video. ‘We wanted to create an exciting way for students to apply and so far the Instagram videos have been super creative and awesome’ Ira says.
10 Days 1 Play will kick off November 9th, with weekday rehearsals held during the evening and weekend rehearsals held in the morning and afternoon. The 10 days will be spread throughout the month of November in order to not conflict with many schools on Aruba whom are having their exam weeks around those same weeks, ‘we don’t want the project to conflict with anyone’s studies, because we want everyone able to participate’ Ira says.
Ira Kip has served as the Artistic Director of the Art Rules Program since its inauguration in 2010. Never the less she has been an active theater practitioner and educator for over a decade earning herself a Dutch Caribbean Pearl Award in 2014, for her work with as Playwright. In 2012 she wrote and directed She’Baltimore, the first theater production on domestic violence in the LGBTQ community, which also earned her a Certificate of Resolution from the Baltimore City mayor. With this play Ira goes down in History as the first Aruban to receive such an honorary certificate in de Baltimore US. In December Ira will collaborate with actor and filmmaker Raymi Sambo to create a reactionary theater production based on the death of Aruba’s own Mitch Henriquez, during the Right About Now Festival in Amsterdam. Unfortunately Mitch was the victim of police brutality in the summer of 2015. The play will center itself around how police violence is killing black and brown people everywhere.
In 2016 Ira will start working on her 3-part theater production, Riot or Revolution (Rel of Revolutie) based on the May 30th 1969 events in Curaçao, a play that is long overdue she feels. Ira believes that theater is the perfect way of expressing how she feels on issues that affect us all especially the youth. For years she has served as an educator in New York, Washington DC and Amsterdam and is extremely excited to finally serve the youth and direct a full-length theater production on her island Aruba.
10 Days 1 Play will wrap up its program with 2 performances on November 26 and 27 in the expo space of Cas Di Cultura, show time 8pm!
